The Experience of Parkinson's Disease in Hai District, Tanzania

Abstract Background Parkinson's disease (PD) is a debilitating neurological that can result in reduced quality of life for people with (PwP) and their families. The incidence PD continues to increase as the global population ages, being experienced Tanzania much sub-Saharan Africa, yet healthcare systems are under-developed not prepared manage burden posed by chronic conditions. Little known about people's experiences long-term drug treatment impact progression has on PwP families' lives. This paper outlines findings from small-scale qualitative research study later stages illness families Hai district Tanzania. Methods Semi-structured biographical in-depth interviews were conducted three six caregivers Interviews explored participants' living caring family member PD, response biomedical treatment, use alternative practices understanding disease. Results PWP all expressed emotional, social, physical economic strain PD. felt angry frustrated deteriorating condition increasing dependence but pleased treatment. Caregivers described full-on nature role which resulted social isolation, worry stress PwPs' progressed. Religion, faith prayers played significant management combination pharmaceutical Participants did report any stigmatisation towards communities. Conclusion financial challenges at advanced district. It highlights need acknowledge spiritual healing support achieve effective care improve wellbeing families, increased awareness region.
